A Day in the Life of a Foreship Intern: Simo, Project Department Trainee, 2nd internship at Foreship.

How did you get to know Foreship? And what made you apply for the second year in a row?

I got to know Foreship through Aalto University's Shipbuilders Club, which had excursions at Foreship. The experience of the first year was great and rewarding; thus, coming back was an easy choice.

What kind of projects were you involved in, and what was your role?

I had a couple of projects that lasted through the whole summer. These had to do with drawing approvals. Mostly, I had to check if we had any new drawings or replies to our comments, then file these and send them to the right person. Along with these, I had more typical tasks regarding fire control plans, escape calculations, sustainability-related projects, and Excel-related calculations.

Could you please describe a typical day at work during your internship?

I usually start my day by checking if there are any answers to our comments or any new drawings to review. Then, I would start working on the current "main" project, for example, writing a sustainability assessment for a certain vessel; in this project, I assisted in writing about Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) and Energy Management System (EMS). I had to compare different providers and find which could be most suitable for that vessel. This text was then used as a part of a larger report. Also, I made a PowerPoint presentation to showcase the report and the results. Then, if there was time between projects, I worked on improving an escape plan calculation, which measures whether stairs were wide enough for all the people to escape in case of emergency.

How do you feel your skills and knowledge have improved as a result of this internship?

In the first year, I learned many AutoCAD and Excel tricks. During my second year, my knowledge improved greatly because the projects I was involved with were so diverse.
